Hello artists,

I thought I should introduce myself. Some of you may know me and others may not.

I'm Zaza, a.k.a. szaza or Samantha— but not Sam! I'll be your friendly neighbourhood Exchange Moderator. What does this mean? From time to time I will be performing a pulse check to see how your progress is going.

I have noticed there hasn't been any activity since February. That's a long time ago. Do we need to pull the plug on this exchange? Please be honest here, if you feel you can't continue, speak up— there's no shame! Life is the priority, and if Moly-X doesn't fit into your life any more, that's ok— just let everyone in the group know so we can all get moving onto other projects.

Can you all let me know who has whose books at this point so we can figure out how to get the books home to their proper owners? Hoarding is not cool, and while you may have every good intention of completing a drawing, if you've had a book for about a year without any communication, well that's just not fair to the owner of the book and the other artists. So let's start figuring this out, shall we?

Okay, I haven't seen a book from this exchange since November. Any movement? I'd love to see my book again soon. I'm not sure who has it or how many people are left to receive it but I think it's only one or two more stops before it's home again. Just wondering as it's my last active exchange right now and I received two finished books in the mail this afternoon.

The starting point for this game was this quote “When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean - neither more nor less.” so Humpty was put in the game along with Mrs Malaprop, Stan Laurel and G W Bush.....they are all climbing the tower of babel, Gods hand ready to smite them for their audacity ( lightning bolts provided) and the three wise monkey cards to give them options....which I am sure none of them will take...

as you might be able to tell , I don't play a lot of board games and this was the hardest moly theme I have come across. I hope its OK Kathleen..... its on its way to Anna Denise now. Could you mail me with your address Anna Denise, I have mislaid my address book....

This is for Kathleen's Moly - the Book of Improbable Games. I have added Arthur Murray's Overland Ballroom Challenge. Think Survivor with sequins. This was made with watercolor pencils, Micron pens, and some machine stitching bits sewn into the book itself on my lovely 40-year-old Kenmore machine.

Wow, I just noticed I've contributed to every book except Lynne and Ste! That's so exciting to be so close to the end!

Carlos' moly has no specific theme so I continued with the themes already started earlier in the book - summer days and fish. Watercolor pencils and magic markers combined with stitching. The top of the water was machine stitched through the page, while the other elements are free-standing thread glued onto the paper. Ready to go to Ste.

Instead of doing my wallet and checkbook, the things I can find, I chose to do all the little bits that settle to the bottom and you can only find them when you are looking for something else.

Summer Memories

Every summer I spent a week at a cottage in Door County, Wisconsin. The cottages belonged to my stepmom's mom, and I believe, her mom's mom too. My dad and stepmom asked me to take a series of photos that her mom had taken and taped together, and scan them and electronically recreate the scene. Ultimately I had several copies printed on a single poster sized sheet so that dad could frame them for Connie's kids. The cottages are being sold, and she wants them to have a little piece of the good old days.

The photos blended pretty well, and the project brought back some fun memories of summers past when I wasn't bogged down with work and responsibilities. The highlight of the vacation was the night we'd build a bonfire on the beach, roast marshmallows, and stare at the sky waiting to see shooting stars (or satellites if that was the best we could do).

And a side effect of the project is that I have a terrific craving for s'mores now, so I think I'll have to pick up the ingredients for the BBQ this weekend.

My apologies, Chensio, that this took so long, but I promise it will be in the mail tomorrow.

Hello,

I was thinking that to get things rolling again and interesting while we are waiting for someone to post their illustration why don't we post the materials we use and/or the studio or table where we work. I am really interested in everyone's post. What do you think? I will start.

I love using colored pencils my favorite media, they are not a certain brand I usually buy

Faber Castell, crayola and prismacolor.

I find that micron markers are great for moleskines!

I like to combine materials when working in my moleskine, or as you would say

mixed media and these are three brands that I work with. I find that Galeria

is very transparent and you can have it as a wash, the liquitex is very creamy and

covers everything very well and golden I think is the best.

This are my watercolors, pelikan. I like them because they are mate and they are not expensive.

Mice wouldn't be my first choice as pets. I have lived through mouse plagues when cars went off the roads because of sheets of mice. They ate through wood and Tupperware and books and if you went out to the shed, they would be running around the bottoms of drums. The cats pretended they couldn't see them, the local boys earned pocket money building better mouse traps and little old ladies devised novel ways of reusing mousepaper (like fly paper, only for mice).

But even so, I always liked sitting quietly on the stairs of the veranda and watching them dart out, all quick and dark-furred with their tiny delicate ears and fiercely curious faces. There was an old piano on the veranda, and the mice inside used to slide up and down the strings, sounding tiny notes.

The quote at the top is from Rose Fyleman's poem, "I think mice are rather nice".

I kind of wish the centre face wasn't, well, at the centre but I can't help what I look like :) It's done, at any rate, and my desk is cleared for the next batch.

I just got Anna Denise's today too, but that's the bag one and should be easy :)

Okay, Chensio's moly! It seems to have a very open theme, so I followed Yoda's idea of carrying on something from the previous entry and it quicky became this little study of a girl's unexpected discovery.

Finally finished up my entry in Nan's 'maps' Moly!
I really enjoyed working on this one. Unlike some of the other, gorgeous, maps in the book, mine isn't very realistic. I started out thinking about 'mapping' my way around the Internet. But then I remembered my love for drawing fictional villages and maps when I was younger. I would dream up entire worlds. I hope my enjoyment shows.

I bought myself a new set of fine line felt tip pens, and used them all here, like a kid at Christmas.

The scanner hasn't done a brilliant job with the purples. The colours are a bit better in real life.

I decided to draw Vrouw Holle (Mother Hulda). Not sure if we can technically call her a witch, but she is a mythical figure with magical powers, so I think that counts. I loved that story when I was little.

Elvia's Farm Animal Moly

I'm happy to report, I've completed my entry in Elvia's Moly. It took me a while to commit to my idea for this moly because the very first idea that popped into my head had nothing to do with animals...sort of. Finally I couldn't help but move forward because the original idea would not be dislodged from my brain.

As I was working along, a light bulb went off above my head (it's very startling when that happens). So I took a break and made an ATC for the back pocket. Elvia, your ATC is the one on the right:

I've been on a pencil kick lately. I did use fixative on it so it won't turn into a graphite smudge.

The text reads:

"Where are the farm animals?" you ask. Don't you see them—as plain as the nose on your face?

I'm talking about the mugwhomps, of course. Actually, it's a small squad of military mugwhomps in a split and stagger formation.

My dad told me all about mugwhomps when I was only 6 or 7 years old, and frankly, I'm surprised your dad didn't tell you.

Mugwhomps are the police/military corps of the farm yard/field. They protect and organize the farm animals. You'll frequently
see cows reporting to the mugwhomps when they go out for exercise. And you'll often see animals taking shelter near the mugwhomp formation.

My dad didn't tell me this specifically, but I suspect they do a great deal of training with the Buckingham Palace Guards—they are similarly unflappable in their duty.

I had a very entertaining childhood...slightly confusing...but very entertaining. :-)

My contribution to Anna-Denise's "What's in my bag" moleskine. This is a representative example, not a comprehensive survey (also, not entirely to scale), but I would like to state - for the record - that yes, I do currently have a sonic screwdriver and a furnishing needle in my handbag :). The "Open other end" label is the sticker on the back of my every-day moleskine (I put stickers on them to tell them apart, but I try to scavenge them wherever possible - this was from Reverse Garbage, an offcut store). One of the stamps is from the envelope the book came in. The Melbourne stamp was floating loose in my wallet - I keep them in there in case I am filled with an uncontrollable urge to send postcards, but for the record am from Brisbane, although I have been to Melbourne.

I was worried I wasn't going to be able to get sketchbooks and other projects done, so I took this one to work yesterday and worked on it in Starbucks on the way to work and for a few minutes after I finished. I don't have a pencil case in my handbag at the moment, so it was drawn straight on with markers which was probably a character-building experience.

I finally finished my entry in Jenn's Moly. My favorite animal is the bumblebee, cause it's so cute. It's furry, it makes a funny noise, it's not dangerous, and has the cutest little big butt I've ever seen. I very much enjoyed working in this book, because with this close-up of the bumblebee I was able to loosen up my style a little bit! Hope you like it Jenn!

Here is my contribution to Chensio's moleskine (at last!). I ran with the idea of wind, because it certainly looked like a windy day on those first few pages. I swept the end of the circle of dancers up into the air, added a scattering of numbers blowing apart, a flowing scarf, autumn leaves, a flock of nannies (my favourite part :) and The Goose Girl (from the fairy tale), along with scraps of poems.

Encyclopaedia of Improbable Games

I'm here! Late, but here! My moly is themed "An Encyclopaedia of Improbable Games", and can be any sort of game: board games, card games, skipping games, dangerous games, bizarre, twisted, excessively complicated games - as long as they're improbable!

Mine is a proposal for a board game called "Heroine Content - Remix!", played with dice and turntables and cards and spinners and volcanoes. The title is more than a nod to the Heroine Content blog, and the game takes some of my favourite heroines and throws them into each others' universes, because I do want to know how Isabella Bird would react if she met Han Solo, or how Anne of Green Gables would cope in a bar brawl in Tibet.

Map of Westport

Well I finally decided to do a map of Westport, Massachusetts, one of the places I grew up and always in my heart. I annotated it with historical facts, both of the town and a few of my own life. I took a few liberties with scale, and removed a couple ponds that I didn't really have room for, but you get the idea anyway. A few additional details added after this photo was taken. Watercolor and marker.

Off to Ste tomorrow.

Amy's Moly Is Moving On

Hello all! Haven't fallen off the face of the Earth, I've just been occupied with a job change. Busy, nervous times to be going through one of those.

Anyway, finally getting down to working on Amy's "Red" Moly was a wonderful distraction. Hope you like the results, Amy.

It was really handy doing the things twice. I did the pencil first in mine, then Amy's. Then the pen in mine, thought it was too heavy, so I switched to a thin Pilot for Amy's. Worked out the kinks of the colors and shading on mine, and did it better on Amy's. You get the idea.

A close-up of the lighthouses. Mine is on top and far wonkier than Amy's.

I'll be shipping this one off to Jen tomorrow. Then I'll be digging into Yoda's witches Moly—what a great time of year to be working on that theme! Maybe it'll get me in the holiday spirit.

For my entry in Lynne's 'superstitions' book I chose to draw the linden (sometimes called lime) tree.

In ancient Germanic folklore this tree used to house the goddess Freya. The guardian of homes and wells and goddess of love. Houses were often built underneath a linden tree and weddings celebrated underneath them. Having a linden tree close to a well was considered a sign of prosperity. I chose this because when I was younger I used to love reading a fairy tale in which a prominent role was reserved for a linden tree / Freya.

I finished this entry a couple of days ago and have sent it onto Carlos! Also, I JUST today received Lynne's WONDERFUL Moleskine!!! It's amazing in 'person'! Hooray! I will try to do an entry this weekend, for next week I will be attending a wedding in California. I will keep you all updated!

She started with Elpheba, so I HAD to do her better half - Glinda the Good.

Unfortunately, the scanner didn't pick up the extremely blingy rhinestones on her wand and tiara. Don't worry, the book still closes just fine with only a very tiny bulge ;)

Hello, I have a question. Does it matter the size of the moleskine Japanese Album? I was very happy to open the package from amazon and I freaked out when I saw two very small moleskines (3-1/3x5-1/2) I guess I did not pay attention to the size. Is it ok? or should I buy another? I see that all of you have the bigger ones.

New Banner

I hope no one minds, but I thought a new banner for the blog would be nice. I don't get to play with graphics as much as I used to, so I started fiddling around and came up with the above image.

Of course, I'm still staring at Nan's lovely map Moly trying to decide what to add to it. I suppose I could print out the banner and paste it in, map and all... ah procrastination!

I finished the first page in my moleskine today, and it's all packaged up ready to post tomorrow.

My theme is anything from your imagination that isn't based on anything from the real world - so any kind of shapes, patterns etc. I hope that makes sense - I've struggled putting this theme into words. I'm not too fussed though - draw anything you like and I'll be happy!

Hi!
I'm Kathleen and I live in Brisbane, Australia. I'm a property lawyer by day, by night a masked... illustrator, writer and translator. I grew up on a cattle property in western Queensland, studied law, German and literature at uni and am still teaching myself art.

I really admire the work of many illustrators, but especially Pauline Baynes, Maurice Sendak and Charles Vess. I do most of my drawing with markers in my sketchbooks, but I also work with scratchboard, pen and ink and digital.
